Patient Evaluation:

A licensed therapist performs an examination of the whole body as it relates to biomechanical function.  This includes:

  • Postural assessment
  • Range of motion
  • Neurological screening
  • Muscle testing
  • Soft tissue examination
  • Arthrokinematic testing
  • Gait analysis

 

Treatment Approach - Philosophy of Healing:

Therapists use a variety of skilled techniques to improve patients’ day-to-day function.

Manual therapy skills are used to resolve the soft tissue and joint dysfunctions identified in the evaluation.  Techniques include:

  • Soft tissue mobilization
  • Myofascial release
  • Strain / counterstrain
  • Craniosacral therapy
  • Muscle energy
  • Joint mobilization

The following modalities are applied to reduce pain and inflammation and for muscle re-education:

  • Ultrasound
  • Electrical stimulation
  • TENS
  • Biofeedback

Patient education is emphasized in:

  • Posture and body mechanics
  • Joint conservation
  • Energy preservation
  • Stress reduction / relaxation techniques

Therapeutic Exercise programs are individualized and include:

  • Flexibility and range of motion
  • Strength and endurance
  • Spinal stabilization programs
  • Pre-conditioning program / training for athletes

Choosing a Physical or Occupational Therapist:

Physical Therapy Services of RI understands that making decisions when you are in pain can be difficult. Let us suggest a few questions to assist you in finding the right therapist for your condition so that you can return to the activities you enjoy.

    1. Will I be treated by a licensed therapist, a therapy assistant or an athletic trainer?
    2. Will I be evaluated and treated by the same therapist?
    3. How many years of experience does the therapist I am going to work with have?
    4. How many years of experience are there collectively in the practice?
    5. Does the practice provide manual orthopedic therapy, that is a anatomical, biomechanical hands on approach which takes into consideration the whole body and the integration of all of the parts?
    6. What other therapeutic techniques will my therapist use?
    7. Will I be treated in an individual room or in a open gym setting?
    8. What are the office hours and locations?
    9. Will the therapist be committed to work with my physician?
